Tuition and Financial Aid
Program Cost
Tuition is charged on a per-credit-hour basis. The rate of tuition for October 2023, January 2024, April 2024 and July 2024 is $2,294 per credit. The online Master of Legal Studies (MLS) program is a 30-credit program. Tuition costs are subject to change each academic year.
In addition to tuition costs, students will be charged an immersion fee, which includes some meals and program activities. Students will be responsible for paying for their transportation to and from Washington D.C., lodging, meals, and local transportation while in attendance at the immersion.
U.S. citizens and permanent residents interested in applying for federal student aid should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) while applying for admission. Include the American University school code, 001434. Sign the FAFSA electronically using your Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID username and password. If you do not have an FSA ID, you can create one at FSA.ed.gov.
Scholarships
We are pleased to inform you that qualified applicants to the October 2023, January 2024, or April 2024 cohort are guaranteed a $15,000 scholarship. Once you begin the application process, your admissions counselor will provide you with further information.
